Assignment One: Make a book cover, 4x7, for the novel “Bad day at Black Rock”. It’s a western. Title and your name only. Type only. Black and white only.
(I interpreted black and white to mean grayscale. I was wrong).
I looked up Bad Day at Black Rock, and they made a movie of the same name that was depressing and bitter and had a lot of stuff being bombed or set on fire.
I did not want to use a damn “cowboy font” because I knew everyone else was going to. My concept was arranging the type to look like a big, lonely mass of crumbling rock, the only thing on the landscape in the middle of nowhere.
Ed Benguiat said “This is pretty damn good…although I wouldn’t call it black and white.”
Every assignment Ed gives us, he does himself. His design had this massive fat-face slab serif with tiny counters. I bet he made it himself. I personally want to add in more elements. This book doesn’t jump off the shelf at me yet.
Type: Franklin Gothic condensed & No.2 Roman, headline is Calame.
